5My Favorite 5-HTP; even my healthcare people love it  Feb 28, 2010
5-HTP was recommended to me for sleep ... it doesn't help me much with that (I have very stubborn insomnia) but it helps with many other things. I notice stress sort of rolls right off, and my good mood is resilient to disappointment. I used to take several prescriptions for many things that arose with years of disabling myofascial pain syndrome; while the 5-HTP didn't directly fix that pain and weakness, it did seem to bump up my responsiveness to osteopathic treatment. Where melatonin had, for me, the common side effect of causing depression, its precursor 5-HTP has had zero side effects for me.

I take 100 mg morning and night; I'd check with a medical care person before going much above that. I'm also not sure about the above claims of short half life, needing frequent dosing, and so on. It certainly doesn't have the fancy extended release technology of some modern antidepressants but there is such thing as too much of a good thing.

When I got pregnant my OB *freaked* about my taking 5-HTP (after saying "I don't know what that is") but I did some research and chose to take it anyway (the alternative was a nasty prescription); later midwives were happy with it. Then I went to see a naturopath and she was THRILLED!!

What my naturopath explained: Most of your neurotransmitters are not in your head, but your gut. 5-HTP, with vitamin B-6, is a crucial ingredient for making your own serotonin and other neurotransmitters. This supplement may be a better idea than many of the prescriptions out there, because it works in your gut by making more of those neurotransmitters.

Not only was she happy I'm taking 5-HTP while pregnant, she was also happy with the NOW brand. She nixed most of my supplements due to additives, but liked this one a lot. I love that it's one of the cheapest and I feel like it's one my body absorbs well.

4I feel great  Jan 11, 2006
Using the 200mg dosage combined with the amino acid L-tyrosine version....I've taken this before with fantastic results....Already, after only two days, I feel better when I wake up, I don't feel fuzzy, my cravings a greatly curbed and I definitly eat less. Be sure to take at bedtime as recommended, it does make you tired. If I remeber the last time I took this, the best way to use it is to take 5 days then not for 2 or for 3 weeks and not for a week, just to give yourself a rest. I am looking forward to having more energy again.

5A SMALL DOSE OF STRONG MEDICINE  Dec 01, 2005
VERY GOOD MEDICINE FOR THOSE OF US WHO NEED IT

As 5-HTP goes, this is good stuff and reasonably priced. It does seem to cause vivid dreams and it seems to have the effects it is supposed to. However, it should be noted that although you need take only 1-2 capsules for insomnia, the short half life of 5-HTP from "GRIFFONIA SEEDS" necessitates rather frequent dosing for depression and appetite suppression, usually 4x per day and attention needs to be paid to the timing of doses with other amino acids. Serotonin syndrome may also be an issue for some.

Whereas many important issues are not certain or resolved regarding 5-HTP dosage and usage, it does seem to do a lot of good when used appropriately. Naturally a lot more can be said and books have been written on 5-HTP. It is a product that must be used with considerable care and professional medical monitoring is advisable due to the serious conditions it is used for and its effects on human brain chemistry. [Depression, Obesity, Insomnia] Nevertheless after taking it for 3 years I can say that I have experienced no negative side effects. Also, I have noticed reduced cravings for sweets, less anxiety in social situations and have slept better than I ever have. There has also been no sign of 5-HTP being habit forming in my experience.

If you are considering using this product for anxiety or sociophobic disorders the same company [NOW] makes a 200mg dosage combined with the amino acid L-tyrosine. Many have found the addition of 250 mg of L-tyrosine to be most helpful and the product still retains all of its other characteristics. --This text refers to the 120 vcaps option.
